What makes M.J. Amsden Furniture's handcrafted furniture so special?
Our handcrafted furniture is built to order. This makes your order personal. Our handcrafted furniture is built using quality joinery, such as mortis and tenon, and dovetails. This joinery, is of course, cut in solid hardwood. At M.J. Amsden Furniture we use no plywood or fiberboard. We meticulously hand plane all surfaces before sanding. We like a hand rubbed oil and wax finish because of its ability to be absorbed by the wood. This absorption makes for a durable finish that does not mask the natural beauty of the wood. We sign and date all our furniture. In the building of handcrafted upholstered furniture frames, we use all the techniques described above. We then upholster that frame with all natural products. We use Jute webbing, 8-way hand tied coil springs, tied with Ruby Twine, no nylon, because in our opinion nylon is too slippery to hold good knots. We use Horsehair stuffing and cotton padding. All this is covered with a muslin cover, to be covered again with cotton padding and finally upholstered with your choice of fabric. And yes, our handcrafted upholstered furniture is also signed and dated. Despite all these features some people still feel handcrafted furniture is to expensive. Yes it does cost more initially, but if you consider that you will only buy one piece rather than a non ending line of corner store variety furniture, it is actually more economical. Also if you factor in the investment possibility, handcrafted furniture may actually increase in value. Imagine if your forebears had the opportunity to buy a new signed and dated Chippendale?
